What is Carbon Footprint and how can we reduce it with sustainable gardening?
If you love gardening and care about the environmental impact of your choices, you know well that having a green thumb is not enough to be a responsible gardener. We must also take into account the Carbon Footprint, i.e. the set of greenhouse gas emissions generated by our daily activities, including those linked to the care of greenery.
The Carbon Footprint is measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) and depends on many factors, such as: the type of energy we use, the means of transport we choose, the products we buy and the waste we produce.
Gardening also contributes to the Carbon Footprint, both for the use of water, fertilizers, pesticides and tools, and for the management of plant residues.
Luckily, there are good practices we can adopt to reduce the Carbon Footprint of our gardening.
Let's see some of them:
Choose plants that are native and suited to the climate
Native plants are those that grow naturally in our area and are therefore adapted to climate and soil conditions. These plants require less water, less fertilizer and less care than exotic or invasive plants, which can become harmful to the local ecosystem.
Furthermore, by choosing native plants we reduce the Carbon Footprint because we avoid importing plants from distant countries, with consequent emissions due to transport.

Water responsibly and without wasting water
Water is a resource that must be used sparingly and intelligently. To water our garden we can follow some advice, such as:
- water during the coolest hours of the day (morning or evening) to avoid evaporation;
- use drip irrigation or micro-irrigation systems that bring water directly to the roots of the plants;
- collect rainwater in special containers to use for watering;
- choose light and compact garden hoses that reduce CO2e emissions in the production and transport phase such as FITT Force and FITT NTS Eco.

Easily repair garden hoses, make them more durable
Garden hoses are essential tools for gardening, but they can also be a source of waste and pollution if they are easily broken or damaged. To avoid having to replace them often, we can choose quality, resistant and repairable garden hoses.
Easily repairing garden hoses makes the products more durable over time. Consequently, we reduce the Carbon Footprint because we avoid producing new plastic waste and because we use less raw materials and energy to manufacture the pipes.
Our FITT Force, FITT Ikon and FITT Yoyo are easily repairable. In fact, you can cut them at the damaged point and reassemble them with the appropriate repair kit.

Choose recycled plastic products
Plastic is a widely used material in gardening, both for tools and containers. However, plastic is also one of the biggest contributors to environmental pollution, especially if it is not recycled properly.
To reduce the Carbon Footprint of our gardening, we can choose products made from recycled plastic, which have a lower impact on the climate and the environment than virgin plastic.
An example is FITT Freel, the compact hose reel made with more than 30% recycled plastic.
This hose reel is complete with FITT Force, the hose responsible for reducing CO2e emissions by 43% compared to a traditional FITT NTS hose.

By following these simple practices, you can make your gardening more sustainable and reduce your Carbon Footprint, thus helping to safeguard the planet and everyone's well-being!
