The main rule for autumn irrigation is to reduce frequency, but maintain consistent depth of watering. Here are some guidelines on how to adapt watering habits:

Reduce frequency: with dropping temperatures and increased rainfall, the soil stays moist longer. It's no longer necessary to water every day as in summer since plants go into vegetative rest
Water deeply: even though frequency decreases, it's important to water in a way that reaches the deepest roots. This will help plants develop a more robust root system, essential for facing winter.
Monitor the soil: before watering, always check the soil moisture level. If it's still moist, there's no need to add more water. The main risk is overwatering, which could lead to root rot.

When to water in autumn

Autumn brings cooler and shorter days, making it important to choose the right times to water:

Morning or late morning: it's preferable to water during the warmest hours of the day, so that water has time to penetrate the soil before nighttime temperatures drop too low. Watering in the evening or at night, in fact, could cause water to remain on the surface for too long, increasing the risk of fungal diseases or root rot.
