How to prevent ice damage to hoses and irrigation in the garden

Image alt text

Winter can be a difficult season for gardening, especially when temperatures drop below freezing and the water present in hoses and irrigation systems risks freezing, causing costly and difficult-to-repair damage. Ice can cause hose breakage and compromise the efficiency of water supply systems. However, with some simple precautions and the use of specific products like FITT hoses designed to withstand the cold, these inconveniences can be prevented.

Drain irrigation systems before the cold

The first and most important measure to prevent ice damage is to completely drain the irrigation system before temperatures drop.

The hoses and sprinklers should be drained to prevent the water inside from freezing, expanding, and causing breakage. This can be done manually or using an air compressor to expel the remaining water.

Collect the hoses and store them in a sheltered place

If you use flexible irrigation hoses, another important precaution is to roll them up and store them in a dry and frost-protected place.

Even though high-quality hoses like those in the FITT NTS range are designed to withstand low temperatures, it is always better to store them in a garage or shed during periods of inactivity. This way, you will extend their lifespan and reduce the risk of damage caused by extreme temperatures.

Insulate outdoor taps and pipes

Outdoor taps are particularly vulnerable to frost. To prevent ice formation in outdoor pipes, you can insulate them with insulating material, such as foam sleeves or specific materials available in DIY stores.

Additionally, closing the internal valves that supply the outdoor taps and draining the excess water from the system is an essential step to avoid damage.

Choose hoses designed to withstand the cold

Using hoses specifically designed to withstand low temperatures is one of the best defenses against ice damage. The FITT NTS hoses are made with anti-freeze and anti-twist technology, which means they maintain their flexibility even in harsh temperatures and do not kink or twist, reducing the risk of breakage due to ice.
