Thorough cleaning of tools

The first step in maintaining gardening tools is cleaning. After a long season of use, it's likely that dirt, grass, resin, and soil have accumulated. These residues can cause rust or damage to the metal and mechanical parts of the tools.

Remove soil: Use a stiff brush or spatula to remove mud and dry soil from tools, particularly from spades, hoes, and shovels. If necessary, rinse with water and dry thoroughly with a cloth before storing the tools.

Clean wooden parts: Wooden tool handles can dry out and crack over time. Run the surface with fine sandpaper to smooth out any splinters, then apply a layer of linseed oil to nourish the wood and protect it from winter moisture.

Lubrication of mechanical parts

Cutting tools and those that include moving parts, such as pruning shears and scissors, require special attention. Rust can easily form on these surfaces, especially if they're not well stored.

Lubricate joints: After cleaning the tools, apply a little lubricating oil to all moving parts, such as joints and screws. This will prevent them from rusting and keep the blades moving smoothly.

Sharpen blades: The blades of cutting tools, such as pruning shears or scissors, lose their edge with prolonged use. Before storing them, make sure to sharpen them with a sharpening stone or a file. Sharp tools will ensure clean and precise cuts in the next season, avoiding damage to plants.

Check and repair damaged tools

During maintenance, carefully inspect all your tools for signs of damage or wear. Chipped or broken handles, loose screws, or worn blades can be dangerous and less effective.

Replace damaged parts: If a tool has a broken handle, consider replacing rather than buying a new tool. Many garden stores sell replacement handles at affordable prices.

Repair loose joints: If you find loose screws or bolts, tighten or replace them. Well-assembled tools are safer and more comfortable to use.

Proper storage

After cleaning and repairing the tools, it's essential to store them in a suitable place during the winter. Exposure to weather elements, such as rain and snow, can severely damage gardening tools.

Store in a dry place: Store tools in a shed or garage, making sure they are protected from moisture. If possible, hang them on a wall or store them on shelves to avoid direct contact with the floor.

Protect large tools: For large tools such as lawnmowers or electric hedge trimmers, cover them with a tarp or use appropriate cases to protect them from dust and moisture.

Take care of irrigation hoses too: To extend their lifespan and reduce the risk of damage caused by extremely low temperatures, remember to empty them, roll them up, and store them in a dry place protected from frost.
